a Growth Mindset: What does yet mean??

When I interpret the message of  “yet” I look at it as if I am telling students there is an anticipation of a positive outcome.  I think of phrases that use the word yet.  “We are not there yet”, “I don’t see it yet….”, Yet seems to be telling us something more is coming, it isn’t over.  “We are out of ice cream, yet I’m headed to the store now.”  I’m seeing the word as an exciting expectation of what is to come.  It really caught my attention when Carol Dweck said “equality happens when the yet mindset is put in practice…by transforming the meaning of effort and difficulty.” This is such a profound comment that the yet message can change a mindset almost the moment it is heard. This can help the students struggling to anticipate that they will be overcoming their obstacle.

BE INTENTIONAL

My perspective about integrating technology into my career is different than most.  I teach for an online middle school and my goal is to introduce technology in the classroom that allows them to feel connected to the lesson and each other.  Many of those in the public school seem to have a fixed mindset of what school should “look” like.  Originally when I started I had that same fixed mindset; however I quickly became intrigued and determined to figure out how to bring the two worlds together in an effective manner. The Universal Design for Learning that I have to focus on is the effective network.  I can’t see my students so if they don’t understand the “why” behind everything I do I will completely lose them.  I can’t see their faces; I can’t see if they are playing on their phones or watching a video so I must use technology very intentionally so that they want to stay focused.
