WOW the Progressive Education video was extremely eye opening. I expected to see a vast difference in education and ready to see how far we have come. I have to say that I am extremely disappointed in where education is today. It seems we have completely gone backwards and I’m not even sure how. How can be part of the most innovative time in history, have the research and science behind us, have history of education to grow from, and be so behind the 1940’s.
I am by nature a positive thinker and a realist. I examine a situation see it for what it is and try to pull out the positive but never ignore the negative. This video really got to me. I am so disappointed in our education system in our country. It seems we have taken out so much of the necessary day to day aspects. In the 1940’s they taught how to survive in the world they were being raised in and we are failing to do that today.
I have made sure my own children have learned about money, saving, tipping, how to purchase on-line responsibly, how to fact check, avoid instant gratification, communicate their needs to adults respectfully etc… These are values that thousands of parents teach daily, but these are also ideas that thousands do not teach and may have not learned themselves. When you think about purchasing on line and using Amazon one click. There are so many life skills our children are not learning at home.
This video sent me into a whirlwind of thinking. What would it look like if we made a similar video now, what should education look like as opposed to what it does look like.
